Overview:

The whole of rehabilitation health care had recognized the relevance of whole-person care, yet often attempts to do so in fragmented ways where bio- psycho- and -social are considered distinct from one another. Further, attempts to fix “targets” or “parts” are often over-reduced from the complexity of ingredients that informs the person’s condition and experience of that condition.

A new textbook, 'Integrative Rehabilitation Practice: The Foundations of Whole-Person Care for Health Professionals', draws from multiple professions as well as scientific disciplines, aims to advance the quality of how the biopsychosocial model is delivered.

Section One lays a solid framework for concepts and skills that are vital to support whole-person care that concurrently takes into account the powerful impact of sociocultural determinants to health.

Section Two presents a series of core skills that draw from the evidence-based subfields within mind-body medicine and psychoneuroimmunology;

Section Three wraps up by introducing the reader to models and concepts that support additional applications and expansions of integrative rehabilitation care.

This online course, presented by Matt Erb, will provide an overview of the core structure and concepts from the book.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Compare and contrast the benefits and pitfalls of reduction vs. integrative (holistic) strategies in clinical care
  2. Discuss a model of care that aims to equalize power base between the health care professional and the patient as well as support enhanced self-care in both.
  3. Review how and why the current status of pain science and the state of pain care underscores the need to improve health care professionals ability to embrace complexity and uncertainty, as well as broaden their skill set for addressing the inseparability of body, mind, and environment.
  4. Summarize and critique the relevance of mind-body medicine skills training as a fundamental component of whole-person care
