Overview

We are raised in a model where we are challenged to fix our clients’ problems.

But what if in order to truly step into a Biopsychosocial Framework, we need to let go of the drive to “fix” and embrace a different approach?

When it comes to the science of psychology and behaviour change, we know that education alone and attempts at convincing people to change their thinking or behaviour are largely ineffective. We also know that treating psychology and unhelpful behaviours as “problems” to be solved can be harmful.

We see much more success in shifting psychology and behaviour for the better when we can take a stance of compassionate curiosity. When we step into the role of facilitator, our clients have a partner on their side as opposed to another “expert” who may or may not have the answers to solve their problems.

In the facilitator role, we can support our clients to build self-awareness, experiment with new and flexible responses to challenging situations or symptoms, integrate new learning, and stay squarely in the driver’s seat of their recovery.

This course, taught by Lara Desrosiers, is the perfect introduction to building a psychologically-informed practice.

We will draw on principles from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in order to provide you with a 4 pillar framework for moving from “Fixer” to “Facilitator”

Learning Objectives

You will walk away with a better understanding of the psychology and practical tools for developing the 4 pillars of effective facilitation in the treatment room:

  1. PRESENCE – learn specific strategies for practicing the art of being present in the evolving relationship that exists in the treatment room

  2. GENUINE CURIOSITY – learn how to notice the urge to offer our own explanations or narratives and choose questions or intentional language that guide reflection and encourage our clients to draw their own conclusions

  3. EXPERIMENTATION– learn how to create experiential opportunities and provide individuals with the space to integrate new learning in ways that challenge fear, promote flexibility and bolster self-efficacy

  4. SELF-DETERMINATION – Learn how to create collaborative goals and action plans with clients when prescriptive programs are falling short
