What is the MORE course?
MORE is an acronym for a model to help therapists look at the qualities of interventions that enhance sensory-motor and postural functions beginning with the suck/swallow/breathe synchrony.
MORE stands for the relationships among Motor action, Oral skill, Respiration, and Eyes (or vision).
This online course examines the interactions among these functions that can either support or compromise the course of normal development.
The instructors, Patricia Oetter and Eileen Richter, are clinical specialists, and the course is designed to enhance clinical practice and outcomes. This course will emphasize the understanding of neuroanatomy and normal development leading to clinical reasoning in treatment. Learning is facilitated through practical lab experiences, case examples, and videos.
What is the Virtual MORE course?
Based on the popular live course, the virtual MORE course is 10.25 hours of recorded course content divided into 3 modules of 3-6 units.
To view an outline of each module, please visit the 'Course Materials' section and click on the 'Outline of Modules' lesson.
Learning objectives
By the end of the MORE online course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the anatomical structures, neurological connections, and biomechanics of the Suck, Swallow, Breathe (SSB).
- Discuss the process by which the SSB develops into synergistic motor patterns that support more complex human functions.
- Identify typical and atypical SSB development in children who have sensory processing/developmental dysfunction through functional observation.
- Document subtle abnormal SSB processes through functional observation.
- Apply treatment techniques designed to enhance oral/respiratory function.
- Implement treatment strategies to improve respiratory patterns, self-regulation, postural control, visual motor skills, feeding and communication skills.
Audience
This online course is available for pediatric occupational and physical therapists, speech pathologists, and other interested professionals working with children with sensory motor challenges.
Please note: When you purchase this course you have a 45-day access duration. This means that you have 45 days to complete the course.
The instructors
MPH, OTR/L, FAOTA
Ms. Richter graduated with a BS in occupational therapy from the College of St Catherine and earned her Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Minnesota. She has over 40 years of pediatric experience in a variety of settings, including children's hospitals, public schools, preschools and neonatal intensive care units. She has extensive background in sensory integration theory and treatment, is NDT certified, and has completed the NDT Baby Course. She has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia on topics related to sensorimotor integration, oral motor/respiratory development and pediatric occupational therapy.
Ms. Richter helped establish and Co-Directed the Avanti Camp in Wisconsin (a sensory integration summer camp for children with sensory processing disorders) for many years. Ms. Richter has been instrumental in bringing continuing education opportunities to thousands of therapists around the country through Professional Development Programs and is now developing therapeutic equipment and other resources under the brand Richter Active Integration Resources (RAIR).
Ms. Richter has published several professional books and articles on sensory-motor integration assessment and treatment for children with developmental delays and sensory processing dysfunction, including, MORE: Integrating the Mouth with Sensory and Postural Functions, the MORE DVD and Out of the Mouths of Babes, Sensorimotor Integration for Developmentally Delayed Children and The Sensorimotor Performance Analysis.

Ms. Oetter earned her bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas and her master's degree in Special Education with special emphasis on Behavior and Learning Disorders from Kansas State University at Fort Hays State.
Clinically, Ms Oetter is an occupational therapist with over 40 years of pediatric clinical experience in sensory integration therapy, Therapeutic Listening, Samonas Sound Therapy, Cranial Sacral therapy and neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT). Her work encompasses many disability groups from newborn to adult, especially infants and children with oral motor, learning, communication and/or behavior disorders. For her contributions to Occupational therapy, she has been honored as a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association and awarded two Service Awards as well.
Currently, Ms. Oetter is a private consultant for families, school districts, and service providers in both the public and private sectors specializing in the provision of diagnostic, therapeutic intervention, and program development services.
Ms. Oetter also has coauthored a number of publications including, MORE: Integrating the Mouth with Sensory and Postural Functions, of which she is the primary author, the MORE DVD, and Out of the Mouths of Babes. She has contributed numerous articles and book chapters over the years.
