There are more surgeons performing Transition Related Surgeries than ever before, and as such, more patients undergoing these surgeries. The majority of these patients are left to navigate a healthcare system where few providers have experience and/or are comfortable caring for and addressing the possible complications of the surgeries. We need to ensure that these people are cared for in the best possible way.
In June of 2019, Women’s College Hospital was the first public hospital to perform vaginoplasties in Canada. This is the first program in Canada to include pelvic physiotherapy as part of their care team. There is a huge role for pelvic physiotherapy within the trans population, whether they are undergoing surgery or not. This lecture will provide an overview of the different surgeries available for trans people who choose to have surgery as well as the role physiotherapy can play in their pre-operative preparation and post-operative recovery.
