The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) is hosting its first-ever Virtual Summit on Nov 20-21, 2020. This summit will bring together the physiotherapy community to build connections and to look toward the future of the profession.

Leading up to the CPA Virtual Summit, we will be running the Virtual Summit Series - a series of live online webinars that will cover a variety of topics and areas of interest. This entire series is free for CPA Members!

Topic: Hip Surveillance for Children and Youth with Cerebral Palsy: Canadian Experiences and Initiatives

Session Description: This session will describe hip displacement in children with cerebral palsy and the evidence for effectiveness of systematic hip surveillance. Hip surveillance initiatives in Canada will be discussed and the key role physiotherapists play in the early identification and screening of children at risk will be highlighted.

Speaker Bio:

Stacey Miller is a physiotherapist at BC Children’s Hospital where she is the Coordinator of the Child Health BC Hip Surveillance Program for Children with Cerebral Palsy. She has completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy and a Master of Rehabilitation Science degree, both at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Stacey has worked as a physiotherapist at BC Children’s Hospital since 2004, focusing on the orthopaedic management of children with cerebral palsy since 2009. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UBC.

Barbara Kelly works clinically and in research at the IWK Health Centre specializing in neuro-developmental paediatrics. In addition, she works as an Instructor at the Dalhousie School of Physiotherapy contributing to the labs, lectures and tutorials for both first and second year students. Barbara received her Diploma in Physiotherapy from University College Dublin, Ireland then went on to earn both her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy and Masters of Science (Rehabilitation Research) from Dalhousie University. She was awarded a Clinical Specialist (Paediatrics) designation by the Physiotherapy Specialty Certification Board of Canada in 2011.

Dr. Kyra Kane, BScPT, MSc, PhD, is a senior physical therapist in the Children’s Program at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina. Her clinical and research interests include initiation of a hip surveillance pathway in Saskatchewan and assessment and orthotic management and of paediatric gait impairments. Kyra also sits on the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Knowledge Translation Committee and the Paediatric Division executive.

The instructors
Dr. Kyra Kane (she/her)
BScPT, MSc, PhD

Dr. Kyra Kane has been a registered physical therapist since 1997, with clinical experience in pediatrics and orthopaedics. She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science and an associate member in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Saskatchewan. Kyra has an MSc in Kinesiology and Health Studies, a PhD in Health Sciences, and extensive postgraduate training and clinical experience in biomechanical gait analysis and orthotic intervention.

Kyra is passionate about supporting the clinical application of evidence and best practices. She has presented her research nationally and internationally through journals, conferences, lectures, and webinars. Her research interests include examining evidence-based use of individualized ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) for children, improving pediatric gait measurement, understanding the experiences of children and clinicians with AFO prescription, and improving pediatric rehabilitation outcomes.
